Bananes Bay Clean-Up ActivityPosted: Monday April 21st, 2008 The Sustainable Development and Environment Unit through funding received by UNEP collaborated with the St. Lucia Solid Waste Management Authority (SLSWMA), The Duke of Edinburgh Award and Fishers of Bananes Bay to undertake a cleanup of the Bananes Bay area on Sunday, April 20, 2008. The cleanup activity was one of a number of activities being undertaken as part of the project which seeks to assess the impact of marine litter on the livelihood of fishers in the area. The cleanup not only rid the community of waste which had accumulated over a period of time but also quantified the types of waste collected. Preliminary results indicate that the predominant waste types collected were plastic beverage bottles and bottle caps. Approximately, forty nine (49) tons of waste was removed during the cleanup. The results of the analysis will be included in a comprehensive project report The SLSWMA commends the Duke of Edinburgh Youth Club and other participants for their willingness to partake in the cleanup activity. Waste Management Workshop for Children of MicoudPosted:Tuesday April 1st, 2008 The SLSWMA from April 2 – 4, 2008 hosted its bi-annual Children’s Waste Management Workshop in the village of Micoud. The workshop was held at the Micoud Secondary School from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. daily and catered for children between the ages of five and fifteen years. The purpose of the workshop was to sensitize and develop awareness with respect to solid waste management among the youth and to assist them to make informed decisions with respect to proper waste management. Issues of solid waste management were highlighted in the form of expressive writing, drama and a tour of the Deglos Sanitary Landfill. Young persons also participated in discussions which focused on the services provided by the Authority. A new activity to the bi-annual workshop was the staging of an antilitter march through the village of Micoud. It is envisaged that the workshop served to strengthen the capacity of the community to deal with solid waste and issues of solid waste thereby improving the quality of life in the communities. Resource persons were drawn from the teaching community of Micoud and Environs, and the Solid Waste Management Authority. The Authority is indebted to the resource persons who willingly accepted to share their knowledge, skills and time with the children.
Rodney Bay Cleanup Activityposted: Wednesday April 30th, 2008 The business community spanning from Rodney Bay Mall to the Pigeon Island National Park and Cap Estate collaborated to undertake a cleanup of the highway in the vicinity of the business houses on Wednesday, April 30, 2008. The activity attracted approximately three to four hundred participants from sixteen business houses. The enthusiastic crowd was very successful at ridding the highway of litter and bulky items such as boxes, old appliances, tyres etc. which had accumulated over a period of time. Participants were very satisfied with the positive feedback that came from the public as they drove along the highway. The SLSWMA commends the organizers and participants for initiating and partaking in such an activity. The willingness and eagerness displayed during the activity is an indication that our people recognize the importance of a clean environment and therefore rally together to clean up and encourage others to do the same.
