This is a one day, 10 hour class taught by Pat O'Donnell who is a former law enforcement officer and is Certified by the National Rifle Association. Pat is an experienced teacher of the class and he has taught the class since December of 1995. |
The class is taught 4 1/2 miles east of Burnet, Texas by appointment.
The class consists of 8 hours of classroom instruction and 2 hours on the shooting range that is located on site. The class size is intentionally kept small, usually no more than 4 students at a time.
Classes are from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm with a break for lunch. Call for reservations for the day you want to attend class.
The 8 Hours of Classroom Instruction Include:
- Law Lessons: Article 4413, Chapters 9, 30.06 and 46 of the Penal Code
- Non Violent Dispute Resolution Lessons
- Gun Safety Lessons
- Home Firearm Safety Lessons
- Child Safety Lessons

Two hours on the Shooting Range
Students take turns shooting at targets and practicing gun safety at the Shooting Range.
Bring these items to class with you:
- Your Handgun....Minimum .32 Cal. (loaner available if needed)
- 50 Rounds of Ammunition
- Eye Protection (glasses will do)
- Ear Protection (ear muffs or ear plugs)
Upon completion of class, a TR-100 Proficiency Certificate is issued. The State of Texas requires this certificate when you send in your application for a permit.
Class Fees:
- Initial Class (first time permit seekers).... $100.00
- Renewal Class (to renew permit)............. $70.00
Location of the Classes
The classes are taught 4 1/2 miles east of Burnet, Texas, just off of Hwy 29. The location is 45 minutes northwest of Austin and 85 minutes north of San Antonio.
Specifics of the Course:
The proficiency demonstration course will be the same for both the instructors and license applicants, and will require firing from three, seven and fifteen yards. The course of fire will be a total of 50 rounds.
Twenty rounds will be fired from three yards
A. Five rounds will be fired, "One Shot Exercize". Two seconds allowed for each shot.
B. Ten rounds will be fired, "Two Shot Exercize". Three seconds allowed for each two shots.
C. Five rounds will be fired, ten seconds allowed for five shots.
Twenty rounds will be fired from seven yards - fired in four five shot strings.
A. The first five shots will be fired in ten seconds.
B. The next five shots will be fired in two stages.
1. Two shots will be fired in four seconds
2. Three shots will be fired in six secondsC. The next five shots at seven yards will be fired, "One Shot Exercize". Three seconds will be allowed for each shot.
D. The last five shots fired at the seven yard line. The time will be fifteen seconds to shoot five rounds.
Ten rounds will be fired from fifteen yards - fired in two five shot strings.
A. The first five shots will be fired in two stages.
1. Two shots fired in six seconds
2. Three shots fired in nine secondsB. The last five shots will be fired in fifteen seconds
Permit Costs (paid to the State of Texas with the application for the permit)
- Under age 60.................... $140.00 for 5 years
- Over age 60.................... $70.00 for 5 years
- Out of State Residents.... $140.00 for 5 years
- Renewal of Permit.......... $70.00 for 5 years
- Renewal Over age 60.... $35.00 for 5 years
