Canyon Lake is located on the Guadalupe River in Comal County, Texas. Canyon Lake has 80 miles of scenic shoreline and covers an 8,230 surface acre area. You will find Canyon Lake located approximately half way between San Antonio and Austin, approximately 14 miles northwest of New Braunfels on FM 306 west from IH-35.
Canyon Lake is one of the deepest lakes in Texas with an average depth of 43 feet and is great for fishing. The reservoir was first stocked in the 1970's and has an abundance of Largemouth Bass, Catfish, and White & Striped Bass.
There are five communities located around the shores of Canyon Lake. On the north side, there are Hancock and Canyon City. The Canyon Lake Marina is located on the north shore in the Canyon Park in Hancock. Two Yacht Clubs are also located on Canyon Lake.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers manages eight public parks on the Canyon Lake shoreline. Cranes Mill Park and Comal Park are located on the south side and Potters Creek Park, Canyon Park, Jacobs Creek Park, North Park, Overlook Park, and Guadalupe Park are all on the north side. These parks offer camping, trailer, and picnicking areas, and boat ramps. Canyon Lake fishing is great and several record fish have been caught.
Tubing down the Guadalupe River
Want more than boating activities? Right below the Canyon Dam off FM 306, you can go tubing down the Guadalupe River. Several river outfitters are located along the highway.
The Canyon Lake Gorge was opened in 2007 and offers tours of rock strata as old as 100 million years showing fossils and a set of dinosaur tracks, and forms a new ecosystem for wildlife with carp and other creatures in a series of pools fed by springs and waterfalls. The Gorge Preservation Society formed as a local citizen's group is developing long-term plans for the Gorge in partnership with the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Canyon Dam is on the north side near Canyon City. The dam is 5 kilometers in length and rises to a height of 224 feet above the river bed. Take a stroll across the dam and take some outstanding water scenery photos along the way.
Want to enjoy some great seafood or just plain home cooking?
You will find plenty of restaurants in the surrounding communities that will take care of your every desire. Some have waterfront locations that offer great views of the water, the soaring birds, and the boats cruising by.
