Lake Georgetown
Lake Georgetown is a scenic reservoir located about 3.5 miles northwest of Georgetown, Texas, in Williamson County. The lake, formed by a dam on the North Fork of the San Gabriel River, covers approximately 1,297 acres and reaches depths of up to 85 feet. Georgetown itself is a growing city with a population of around 67,000 and is well known for its vibrant downtown, historic charm, and close proximity to the Greater Austin area.
Lake Georgetown is a popular destination for sports and recreation. Managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the lake features four main parks—Cedar Breaks, Jim Hogg, Russell, and Overlook—that offer boat ramps, swimming areas, picnic spots, and campsites for tents and RVs. Anglers enjoy fishing for largemouth bass, channel catfish, white bass, and crappie, making it a hotspot for both casual and serious fishing enthusiasts..
Outdoor lovers can explore the Goodwater Trail, a 26-mile loop that encircles the lake. It’s a favorite for hiking, mountain biking, trail running, and horseback riding. The terrain varies from gentle paths on the north side to more rugged stretches on the south, offering options for all skill levels. Nearby parks also offer opportunities for disc golf, soccer, and baseball, making the area ideal for a wide range of sports activities.
Beyond the lake, Georgetown offers several nearby attractions for tourists. Blue Hole Park, a natural swimming spot on the San Gabriel River, is perfect for a relaxing dip. Inner Space Cavern offers fascinating underground tours, while Georgetown’s historic courthouse square features boutique shopping, dining, and seasonal events like the Red Poppy Festival. Together, these attractions make Lake Georgetown a well-rounded destination in the Texas Hill Country.
