Midland-Odessa
Midland-Odessa, often referred to as the “Petroplex,” is a combined metropolitan area located in West Texas, roughly halfway between El Paso and Fort Worth along Interstate 20. With a population of around 340,000, the region serves as a vital hub for the Permian Basin oil industry while offering a unique blend of desert charm and cultural experiences.
Sports are a big part of local life, especially high school football, which draws large crowds and fierce local pride. The Midland RockHounds, a Double-A Minor League Baseball team, provide family-friendly fun throughout the spring and summer at Momentum Bank Ballpark. Odessa is also home to the Odessa Jackalopes, a junior ice hockey team that competes at the Ector County Coliseum.
Tourists can explore a wide range of attractions from the Permian Basin Petroleum Museum in Midland to the Stonehenge replica on the University of Texas Permian Basin campus in Odessa. Art lovers will enjoy the Ellen Noël Art Museum and Wagner Noël Performing Arts Center, both offering performances, exhibits, and classes year-round. The area also has a growing food and brewery scene with plenty of local favorites.
For outdoor enthusiasts, there are parks, golf courses, and nature trails scattered throughout the area. While the region is more desert than greenery, it boasts clear skies and dramatic sunsets that make for great photography and stargazing. Whether you’re catching a game or exploring West Texas heritage, Midland-Odessa delivers a blend of grit, culture, and hospitality..
