Boating on Lake LBJ

Nestled in the heart of Central Texas, Proctor Lake is a favorite destination for fishing, boating, and outdoor recreation. Conveniently located near the towns of Proctor, Comanche, De Leon, and Dublin, this scenic lake offers something for everyone — from casual day-trippers to avid anglers and campers.

Proctor Lake spans 4,610 acres with 38 miles of picturesque shoreline, fed by the Sabanna and Leon Rivers in Comanche County. Just 100 miles southwest of Fort Worth, the lake reaches depths of up to 34 feet and experiences moderate seasonal water fluctuations.

Four federally managed parks surround the lake, each offering 250 acres of space for camping, fishing, boating, hiking, and picnicking. Golfers can also enjoy a relaxing round on the nearby 18-hole course.

Fishing enthusiasts will find plenty to love at Proctor Lake. Cast your line from a boat, the shore, or one of the designated fishing piers. According to Texas Parks and Wildlife, the lake boasts excellent fishing for striped and hybrid bass, as well as crappie. Largemouth bass and catfish are plentiful, and you'll also find fair opportunities for white bass and sunfish.

Sowell Creek Park, one of the lake's most popular spots, features a large roped-off swimming area perfect for cooling off on a hot day — just remember, it's unmonitored and lacks a lifeguard, so swim responsibly. The park also has wide, grassy fields ideal for games, relaxation, or simply soaking in the view.

With over 25 covered picnic tables overlooking the water, Sowell Creek Park is a fantastic location for family outings and group get-togethers. Kids love the park’s playground, and the fishing pier is a local favorite for anglers hoping to land a big catch.
