Three Rivers, Texas, weather forecast

Choke Canyon Reservoir, a vast body of water in South Texas, is a prime destination for serious water sports enthusiasts. Located roughly 65 miles south of San Antonio, near the small towns of Three Rivers (population around 1,474) and Calliham (population around 182), this massive 26,000-acre reservoir offers an expansive aquatic playground far from urban crowds.

When it comes to water sports, Choke Canyon truly shines. Its immense size provides ample room for a variety of activities. Powerboating is incredibly popular, with plenty of open water for waterskiing, wakeboarding, and tubing. The lake's deep and extensive channels allow for exhilarating rides. Kayaking and canoeing are also highly favored, providing a more serene way to explore the numerous coves and the dense brush and woodlands that line the shore. Choke Canyon State Park, with its Calliham and South Shore units, offers convenient boat ramps and access points for all types of watercraft.

Fishing is arguably the premier water sport at Choke Canyon Reservoir, drawing anglers from across the state due to its reputation for producing trophy-sized fish. The reservoir is particularly renowned for its exceptional largemouth bass fishing, with frequent reports of double-digit catches. Anglers also target a robust population of blue and flathead catfish, as well as white bass, especially during their cooler-month runs in the Frio River channel. Whether you're a seasoned pro with a bass boat or prefer casting from the bank, the diverse submerged structures and aquatic vegetation offer prime fishing grounds.

Beyond the thrill of the catch and the exhilaration of high-speed boating, Choke Canyon Reservoir provides a comprehensive water-based recreational experience. While swimming is permitted, it's generally a more natural, less developed swimming experience compared to some other Texas lakes. The state park units offer amenities like fish cleaning shelters and even bait shops, catering to the avid angler. The vastness of the reservoir, combined with its abundant fish and wide-open spaces, makes Choke Canyon a dedicated haven for water sports in South Texas.
